History: One major journey was made into the Gates of Arctic National Park 150 miles above the Arctic Circle for 20 days to photograph the majestic Brooks Range and it’s granite walls, the Arrigetch Peaks emerging from the tundra in the Brooks Range with fall foliage lighting the foreground on fire. The trip to Gates of the Arctic and the Arrigetch resulted in pictures that have been exhibited, published in national magazines, books and won international awards. Our most recent grand journey was to the Ruth Amphitheater on Mt. McKinley, a vast glacial gorge for a ski expedition tour. My imagery includes extensive coverage of Alaska's Denali National Park and Brooks Range, The Pacific Northwest, the Mount Baker Area, North Cascades National Park, Olympic National Park,Mt. Rainier National Park, Mt. St. Helens Monument, the Parks and National Forests and other natural areas of Washington State. Other sites include the Columbia Gorge, Hells Canyon, Oregon, Canadian Rockies, British Columbia, Canada, the American Southwest, Eastern Europe and the Tatra Mountains of Poland and Slovakia. His climbing and backcountry survival training was by the Mountaineers and Wilderness Rangers of Denali National Park, Alaska and many long treks. Brett Baunton's career history includes being a musician and a Photolab technician at Seattle's custom lab Ivey. He started as a color analyzer at Prolab and progressed to custom mural and Ciba printer at Ivey. Brett started ArtScan in 1993 in Bellingham. Brett has gone to all digital reproduction in house. Artist Statement:
My passion is to hike into remote wild places and capture the light as it plays across the landscape. I search out scenes that speak of the magnificence and fragile state of nature. I am inspired by the splendor of the natural world and in particular, alpine areas. I create images of places that speak to my soul. Mountains, glaciers, old growth forests, wildflowers and water are my favorite subjects. Photography encourages me to see details of our world in a new perspective from miniature to grand. What one captures in a photograph is present for only a moment’s time like the break of sunlight between mountain storms, a rainbow or alpenglow after sunset. In these rare and special moments I focus on colors, patterns and textures. Ultimately I hope that my images will allow others to see, feel and experience the peace, exhilaration and wonder that I experience when I am outside in the wilds of nature. I also hope it gives the viewer another reason to be good stewards of our land. I create grand landscapes and images of people hiking and skiing in landscapes for a sense of scale and adventure. With a 4x5 view camera I created a body of work that enables mural size enlagements with amazing details. Over 25 years I have explored and photographed our natural world with an extra special passion for Mt. Baker, The North Cascades and Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park, Alaska.I really enjoy route finding and exploring the untracked wilderness. As a backcountry explorer and backcountry ranger in Denali I did a lot of that as there are no human trails or bridges so routefinding and river crossing was part of the adventure.
